Paint the Moon

Still feeling pretty rough, and I know I am not the only one. it seems everyone and anyone I talk too at the moment has been struck down by either the sickness bug ot this rotten flu/cold virus! I have the latter.
As well as feeling not quite myself I am studying! I am on a ELKLAN course thanks to work. I am doing a level 3 ECAT course (every child is a talker); speech and language support for under 5's.
I have a lot of interest in speech problems in children, as Izzy has had speech therapy in the past and is still closely monitored. She also suffers with a stammer.
I have chosen a child in my class as my "project" and already I see so many similarities in this child and Izzy at the same age. Its a 10 week course and at the end I will (hopefully) have an A level equivalent qualification!

So why Paint the Moon as the title of this post? Aha, my new favourite photography love! Annie is a mum to 2 girls, lives in a beautiful house, takes amazing photos, is stunning herself and is the brains behind Paint the Moon photo actions, which I am totally in love with!
Check out the website and Annie's blog. You will be inspired.
I am patiently waiting for some beautiful Autumn weather to try out some shots with the girls using Annie's actions.
Another favourite photograher at the moment is Skye Hardwick. I hope to be taking photos like this one day! I love Skye's style, her vintage props, her post processing, everything about her photograhy! And she takes most photos in her backyard! Some backyard LOL

Do you have a favourite photograher at the moment? Do share

Matt Cardle

The XFactor is back in full swing, and tonight was boot camp. The usual" How do you get this far?" were amongst the 211 that made it through, and then there were 2 stars that outshone the rest of them by a mile!
Totally loving Cher Lloyd, a real breath of fresh air, totally different and very young, only 16! But my favourite of the night by far was Matt Cardle, painter and decorator from Essex( i think!)
He sang an all time favourite song of mine, which funnily enough is a version by Mel Torme, not a female vocalist. Anyways, if you didint catch tonights episode here is the video, watch and enjoy!

Lack of updates due to a poorly household. We have all managed to make work and school, but now its crash and burn! Peter was at home when i got back from work as he was a poorly soul too. There are so many off work with bugs off all kinds, I am just thankful I havnt caught the sickness bug!

Working hard behind the scenes on launching a new photography site. I have been thinking long and hard about taking my photography seriously and have decided to take the plunge. I dabbled a little a few years back, didnt do much last year due to starting work, but 2011 will see me taking things much more seriously.
To start things off I am doing an incredible offer to build my portfolio up. See yesterdays post for details.
I have spent the last year studying and working on a style of photgraphy that I like and would want hanging on my walls; natural light, natural images, capturing the heart and soul of my clients.

I am really excited about this new venture.

For now, I think its another hot toddy (boy that brandy is good stuff!) and my duvet! Need ot feel better, spring bulbs need planting and I have my crop on Sunday!

Birthday Girl

10 years ago, I gave birth to Isabella Bowkis, weighing in at 8lbs 5oz at 2.05am at North Tyneside hospital.
Today I have a beautiful 10 year old that I am so proud of. She's not perfect, but most days she is a perfcet daughter.
  • She has a heart of gold, so caring and considerate, but she also has a raging temper and can switch from nice to naughty in minutes!
  • She is naturally talented, a great dancer and musician, but is lazy and gets bored easily and does not reach her full potential!
  • Is very untidy, but would spend the day at Nana's doing housework!
  • Her favourite meals are Pasta Carbonarra, Fish and Chips, and Roast Dinner especially the roast potatoes!, she hates bananas, peanut butter and bread with bits in!
  • Loves the water, would spend the whole day at the beach in the sea if she could, finds going for walks boring!
  • Listens to JLS, Foo Fighters, Katie Perry and Otis Reading.
  • Favourite Films are 17again, Lord of the Rings Triology, Toy Story
The weekend we have celebrated in style.
Saturday a pottery party for friends and family.

Sunday, Izzy and I had a girly day out shopping in Cambridge.

And today I met the girls for lunch at school and Peter came home early so she could open ehr pressies as soon as she got home.
Dinner is Fish and Chips!

They grow up so fast, my first born is now in Year 5, in double figures and wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up!
Happy Birthday Izzy,
Love you loads

Bluberry Hill Picture Frame

blogged by me domestic goddess On 9/17/2010 06:24:00 PM 4 lovely comments
Yetserday was my blog post over at Nikki Sivils. I used the new Bluberry Hill collection 6" x 6" mini pads, to alter a Ikea picture frame.
Nikki's mini pads are so versatile, pefect for mini books, card making and altered projects. All her paper collections come as a 6" x 6" mini pad, each paper sized down to 6" x 6" and 3 sheets of each pattern paper!

I used an Ikea 51/2" x 51/2" white picture frame as my starting point.

Using simple layers and paper strips I started to build up my mini layout.

Next I cut out diecut shapes using the Bluberry Hill diecut sheet, uisng 3d pads to "pop" the shapes.

Supplies : Ikea picture frame, Nikki Sivils papers, Nikki Sivils Diecuts, Nikki Sivils bread(less) tag, Such Sweet Tierney Button, Ribbon, Cosmo Cricket Chipboard birdie
I am definitley going to be making a set of these mini works of "art".

Blackberry Crumble Cake

blogged by me domestic goddess On 9/12/2010 09:04:00 PM 3 lovely comments
I cannot take the credit for this, although I wish I could as it is so scrummy. Thanks to Sandie who emailed me the recipe after my status on FB about blackberries, and I am eternally grateful!

Blackberry Crumble Cake - 12 -16 sqaures

4oz Butter
6oz Caster Sugar
1 egg
10oz Self Raising Flour
4floz Milk
1tsp Cinnamon
8oz Blackberries

For the Crumble -
4oz Caster Sugar
3oz Plain Flour
finely grated zest of 1 lemon
2oz Butter

Preheat oven to 180c/Gas 4/160c fan oven
Butter and line a 12" x 7" Oblong Cake Tin (9" square works too)
Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl until the mixture is pale and fluffy.
Whisk in the egg, then carefully fold in the flour, cinnamon and milk until thoroughly combined.
Spoon into the tin and spread evenly.

Sprinkle over the Blackberries.

Mix together the sugar, flour and lemon rind.
Rub in the butter until the mixture is crumbly, then sprinkle on top of the blackberries.

Bake for 45 minutes until the topping is golden and the blackberries start to burst through.
Cool in the tin. When cool, lift the cake out and cut into squares.
This comes highly recommended by my colleagues, the girls and Peter. If there is one thing I recommend you going out to pick blackberries for , it has got to be this cake!

Tomorrow I will have an Inspiration Monday inspired by blackberries and a step by step layout. Alos the winner of the Pink Paislee Rak

Hope your weekend was a good one.

Blackberries

blogged by me domestic goddess On 9/10/2010 06:33:00 PM 3 lovely comments
I have never seen so many blackberries in my life, as I have seen surrounding the countryside here in Cambridgeshire. Now we are out twice a day with Suki, we have found our favourite bushes that have a super crop, and we are seen daily with our bags, filling them to the brim with large juice blackberries.

Now there is only so much you can do with a blackberry, or thats what I thought until i tried a few things, googled a few recipes, and was sent a few recipes.
I believe the blackberry season is coming to an end, so if your freezer or fridge is not jammed pack with these juicy black beauties , I suggest you go for a lovely country walk and pick pounds of them this weekend, because this weekend is dedicated to BLACKBERRIES

This post I am going to talk Jams. I know its an obvious one, but dont think just Blackberry Jam.
You need very little specialized equipment for jam making, but there are a few things I would recommend having in your cupboard.

A heavy bottomed saucepan
A funnel
Cooking themometre

I highly recommend shopping at Lakeland for all your preserving/jam making needs. Although I do purchase jam jars, I also recycle jars.
Some Jam Basics:

Sterilizing Jars -

To sterilize your jars, wash in warm soapy water, rinse and place into the oven at 90c for 5 minutes. Alternative pop into the diswasher. Jams will keep for months when the jars are sterilized correctly. So get jamming now for Christmas presents.

Setting point -

If you dont have a cooking themometre you will need to check if your jam will set. Pop a saucer into the freezer whilst boiling your jam. Once you are ready to check setting point pop a tea spoon of jam onto the plate and pop in fridge. Check back after a minute or so and see if the jam has set.

Quantities -

Also use the same qty of fruit to sugar, easy!

Perfect Partners -

Blackberry and Apple
Blackberry and Plum
Blackberry and Elderberry
Blackberry and Sloe

all the above are growing wild in our English countryside!!

Blackberries contain enough natural pectin which  makes for perfect jams, and no need to buy specialised sugars!

Blackberry Jam - will make 3 - 4 jars (500g)

2lbs washed blackberries
2lbs castor sugar
1/2 cup of water
rind and juice of 1 lemon

Place blackberries into a large saucepan and cook until soft.
Add the sugar, lemon juice, rind and water. Boil until you reach jam setting point (108c) The jam will have a frothy top!
Boil for a further 5 minutes.
If you like your jam fruit free, then strain using a muslin cloth.
Using your funnel add the jam to warm sterilized jars.
Let cool and decorate and label your jars.

Blackberry and Plum Jam - will make 3 - 4 jars (500g)

This recipe we use to add as a glaze to ham and an accompaniment for cold meats.

11/2lbs washed blackberries
1/2lb stoned and washed plums
1/2lbs sugar ( use 2lbs sugar if you wnat this as a sweet jam)
1/2 cup of water
Rind and juice of a lemon

as above but let jam coming to boiling point and decanter into jars. This will not be as firm as above jam. Perfect to add to the Christmas ham.

We have lots of sloes and elderberry about at the moment, and I will be picking elderberry to add to jams and sloes in October. Freeze a few pounds of blackberries now for use in October.

Over the weekend we will be looking at a savoury blackberry chutney, perfect with cheeses on Boxing Day, and the most delicious cake using blackberries; One not to be missed! FB followers may know what I am talking about!
No scrapbooking addict would not miss the opportunity to scrap some photos. I will be doing an easy step by step tutorial using a blackberry theme.

Its all gone a bit blackberry mad here!
If you have a favourite blackberry recipe do share.
You may have noticed I have added a new page to the blog "recipes". I am working on this over the weekend, and I will have all the recipes from the last 4 years linked to this page.

Super fast Layout

blogged by me domestic goddess On 9/09/2010 05:12:00 PM 4 lovely comments
Sometimes when I sit at my desk, wanting to desperatly create, I just stare at a blank piece of Bazzill cardstock for ages. Sometimes when I sit at my desk I end up creating a super quick layout that I love.

This is one of those such layouts. Nothing fancy, very little product, 1 photo, letter sized cardstock and a template I will use over and over again!

Infact this design will likely be the focus of my school album I am working on for the girls, and which will turn up on here as a tutorial!
Do you end up sitting at your desk and not creating, other days everything comes together super quick!? Do share your scrapbook stories.

Supplies : Love Elsie Daisy pattern papers, Love Elsie Daisy chipboard, Bazzill cardstock, Dear Lizzy ribbon

Drop by tomorrow for oodles of ideas with Blackberries!! We have been over run with them here, and I cant leave a blackberry on a bush, LOL. So I have pounds of the little black beauties, and have become an expert in cooking with them.

Thanks for stopping by.

Just had to share this photo of Lilly. Lilly chose a kids magazine because it had a camera on the front, and she has been photographing everything insite, just like her mum eh! See the angled camera, every budding photographers first move!!

Lilly and I did the evening walk this evening. I love when its just the two of us, Lilly always has a great story or question for me. Today she said "Fight your Fears". I was like "what did you say Lilly?"
Lilly : "Fight your Fears mummy, you should always face your fears and you will becoming stronger"
Some big words from a 7 year old, dont you think. But she has a good point!

So my new quote is going to be "Fight your Fears" by Lilly Bowkis. What did your kiddies say to you today that made you sit up and think?

Izzy in the Spotlight

blogged by me domestic goddess On 9/05/2010 08:22:00 PM 2 lovely comments
Friday evening was a perfect English Summer evening. I love taking Suki out at this time of day. It is also a time we are usually all home and can go out as a family.
I hadnt planned on taking my camera with me this walk, but Izzy asked me too, and I never like to miss an opportunity when Izzy wants her photo taken. She can be quite tempermental when it comes to having her photo taken and I dont like to push her, I realise its an "age" thing. So you can imagine when she actually asked me to bring my camer, I jumped for joy.
Well I ended up with a series of photos I LOVE. I captured sunflare, Izzys character and the girl I love so much. My happy Izzy, my little girl, and not the teenager she seems to be racing towards becoming.

Lilly and Peter were busy throwing frisbee for Suki, and Izzy was just dancing and flinging her arms about, singing away. I just snapped and snapped hoping to capture a photo.

I am so happy to have captured lots of photos that I will cherish!

photos have been edited in CS2

BTW: Pencil Lines has not gone live yet, due to technical problems with loading images on typepad. If anyone knows what the problem is can you let me know. I know its not just me. I am just so frustrated!

Hope you had a lovely weekend.
Happy Labour Day weekend to my US friends and readers.

1st Day of School

blogged by me domestic goddess On 9/04/2010 08:45:00 PM 4 lovely comments
The girls and I returned back to school on Thursday, and as is customery in the Bowkis household, we do our first day back at school piccies!

Izzy was determind, on a glorious sunny September morning to wear her new winter coat! Gosh my girl has grown so much. She is as tall as Nana now, shares crocks and trainers with me, and has often be seen wearing one of my "skinny me" hoodies!! Finally my baby girl is 10 in a couple of weeks time, please someone tell me where the last 10 years have gone!

Lilly, ahh well Lilly, she just wants to know "why didnt you borned me a boy?" at the moment, so is sporting a pair of black trousers and a white shirt ( a girls white shirt, not the boys white shirt she tried to get me to buy!!)
This little girl is now a year 3 and growing up before my very eyes. No longer content with curling up on the sofa with me, wearing pretty fairy dresses and running round the garden barefoot. Now you are more likely to see her running round the garden in a pair of cut off jeans with a homemade bow and arrow!

excuse the image quality, I have compressed for the web!

My girls, however many miles apart they seem to be, they are so alike too and love each other to bits!
I am a very lucky Mummy!!
